Ocean spray contains microscopic salt particles of Sodium Chloride and Magnesium Chloride that can travel miles inland on wind and storms, settling on window glass, frames, hardware, and seals. When these salt deposits combine with moisture, they create an electrolyte that accelerates corrosion, allowing chloride ions to penetrate protective coatings and trigger oxidation and pitting in metal components. Florida’s heat, humidity, and frequent coastal winds only intensify this process, making window deterioration happen faster than it would in less demanding environments.

The damage extends beyond metal corrosion. Salt crystals that accumulate on glass can become embedded in microscopic surface pores. As humidity, rain, and sunlight create repeated wet-dry cycles, these crystals expand and contract, leading to tiny fractures that scatter light and leave glass looking permanently cloudy or etched. Salt-laden moisture can also degrade weatherstripping and seals, while wind-driven rain pushes salt deeper into tracks and openings, creating long-term performance issues that are often difficult to detect until damage has become significant.

Different window materials respond differently to coastal conditions, but no window is completely immune. Aluminum frames are especially vulnerable to pitting and oxidation, while hardware such as screws, hinges, and rollers can corrode rapidly if not made from stainless steel. Even corrosion-resistant vinyl windows can experience staining and surface buildup. Over time, salt-related deterioration can weaken structural integrity, compromise seals, reduce energy efficiency, and increase the risk of water intrusion. The best defense is routine maintenance, including regular rinsing to remove salt deposits, applying protective coatings, and selecting corrosion-resistant materials designed for coastal environments.
